A very impressive figurine from the Royal Doulton Sea Characters series, this is 'The Helmsman' HN 2499, standing 9 inches tall (22.9cm). It was modelled by Mary Nicoll, who was their leading artist of character figurines from 1954 until her death at the early age of 52 in 1974. She specialised in maritime figures and older folk. This one was issued from 1974 until 1986 and depicts a seaman in a duffle coat and peaked hat standing at the wheel of the ship. It is signed on the base by Mary Nicholl and is in perfect condition.
