The base is a beautiful cobalt blue, although it appears black in the photos. These paperweights were crafted in France by Cristalleries d'Albret, known for their high-quality glass products. Cristal d'Albret produced these paperweights in the 1960s, with the Christopher Columbus design appearing in 1966 and 1967.
