Doulton & Slaters Patent was a technique developed by Doulton's senior manager, John Slater, in the 1880s, which involved pressing lace or other materials into the clay before firing, painting, and gilding. You can see the result in the upper part of this piece. The markings indicate the item was produced by Doulton Lambeth in London, which predates the name Royal Doulton
