A very rare 19th century piece of Portuguese Palissy ware from Caldas de Rainha and most likely produced by the firm of Mafra & Son, which was established in 1853. There is a barely discernible makers mark on the reverse with the letters CALDAS and PORTUGAL appearing. These particular pieces were reproductions of the designs and glazing techniques of 16th century artisan Bernard Palissy. This item is in very good overall condition with the exception of a chip on the tail end of one lizard and three chips on the underside foot rim. Diameter is 10-1/4” and the overall depth is 2” rising to 3” at the highest point of decoration.
