Manufactured by Gillinder & Sons Glass Company primarily during the late 19th century (circa 1860s to 1890s), these unique Victorian-era novelty paperweights feature a scalloped, ribbed clear-pressed glass body. In the center cavity sits a miniature turtle made of lightweight metal or natural materials with loosely balanced, counterweighted legs, head, and tail. When you shake or tilt the glass, the parts move to simulate a crawling motion. Some versions were famously sold as souvenirs at historic exhibitions, such as the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial World's Fair. This is in great antique condition all legs and arms move. No cops cracks or repairs.
