Quirky little things full stop and thank you to the helpful messenger who sent me some more information on them. The backstamp was only used for 12 years between 1902-1914, when the factory closed. The shape ...why does that scalloped band only run full-length down one side? Because the vase design was intended to represent a leather bottle, the long scallop mimicking the seam stitching. The pattern - I’m still happy to describe as heather flowers, but focus on the black lines and it reads EXETER. I’m informed they are part of Locke’s crested wares mirror range of souvenir items - see how EXETER is reflected in the pattern? Lucky Exeter souvenir vases which makes them even lovelier now!
